  Back to Kids' Voices Brad

Hi! I am Brad. I am 10 years old and I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 3. Since then I have been very healthy. I have only been hospitalized once and with my parents guidance I usually have A1c's around 7.

I started on the Animas 1200 pump in February 2005. Prior to that I was on Lantus and Humalog. The pump has really given me so much more freedom than I had before. I do a lot of sports and outside activities so it was a little tough with Lantus because I couldn't shut the Lantus off when I had a very active day that wasn't preplanned. Now I either slow my pump down or if I am swimming, playing a ball game or racing a motorcycle I take it off. The extra activity keeps my sugars right in line and I don't have to constantly stop to eat. I love it.

Also I can participate in special class parties with just the push of a couple buttons. I always said it was no big deal when all the kids in the class could have treats and I couldn't. It kind of did bother me. Now, it is no problem. I also love 1 shot every three days instead of 5 a day. The programming is easy, I do most of it myself. If you're thinking of switching to the pump, go for it. You'll be so glad that you did.
