  Back to Kids' Voices Alycia

Hi, my name is Alycia. I am 11 years old and have had diabetes since I was 2 years old. I used to take 4 shots a day until June 2002. Then I went on the pump. I use the Minimed Paradigm 511 and am looking onto upgrading to the 512. I love the pump! I have almost a normal life now. I can sleep late, eat on my schedule instead of an insulin schedule and my blood sugars have never been better.

I have a younger brother named Jeremy. He is 8 years old. I have a puppy named Precious and my brother has a dog named Chocolate. We also have a cat named Sassy. I just love animals. Oh yeah, my mom and dad are great, too!

I love to draw. My favorite characters to draw are from the Anima collection. I love to read all of the Tokyo Pop collection of books, too. I also love to listen to music and play video games. I want to be a comic book artist when I grow up.

Because of a lot of problems at school, my brother and I are both homeschooled. I have been homeschooled since 1998 and it is great! My best friend is homeschooled, too.

Our family is very active in finding a cure for diabetes. I met with former Senator of Missouri, Jean Carnahan as part of the "Remember Me Campaign". She was super nice and really took the time to listen to what I had to say about my life with diabetes. We participate every year in the JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes Campaign, too. I hope we can help find a cure soon.

Have a blessed day and remember to look up ;-)
