My name is Christine, I am Paige's mom. Paige was diagnosed with diabetes on August 22, 1999. She was only 15 1/2 months old at the time. She was just starting to walk and didn't have the energy to even sit up just days before the diagnosis. She was very lethargic and very thirsty and wetting through her diaper onto her crib mattress. She would be falling asleep just after
waking up from 12 hours of sleep. We were all very concerned.
We brought her to her pediatrician and he thought she was teething and ordered corn syrup to help her constipation. Two days later there was no change and we brought her to the ER and they did a blood sugar test and it was 321. We were told after that she was diabetic and was dka and had to be send to another hospital where there was a pediatric ICU. We were all devastated and learned how Paige will need insulin shots to survive and glucose checks and how eating and insulin all had to be planned. It was terrible.
Paige was in ICU for about two days and thankfully she was moved to another room and got progressively better. In the meantime, we practiced drawing insulin into the syringe and practiced giving shots into oranges. Then after she moved into the other room I gave Paige an insulin shot. I remember to this day what it felt like. It bothered me a great deal hurting her, but I knew I had to, to keep her alive. It was a tough pill to swallow but to have her here now and seeing how happy she is and how brave and amazing she is is worth all the money in the world to our family.
She still fights us with the insulin shots but with the glucose tests she acts as if it's nothing. Her bravery and attitude is what keeps us going. I pray that soon there will be a cure, for all these brave little kids.
