Hi. My name is Rachel and I am 6 1/2 and live in Tennessee. I got diabetes on February 12, 2000, two days before Valentines day. The first signs I had were getting really thirsty, and then I was urinating a lot. My mom was getting worried that I might have a bladder infection, so after school on Friday we went to the doctor and that is when we found out I had ketones in my urine. So we went immediately to the hospital. They took my blood and the sugar level was over 600, so we stayed in the hospital for two days, then I got to come home.
I do not mind the finger pricks, and only get insulin twice a day. I do my own finger pricks and give my own shots. Sometimes I draw up my own insulin.
One time I went so low that I went into insulin shock. My parents were really scared but they quickly gave me lots of sugar and within 15 minutes I was fine. I don't remember any of it however.
My favorite things to do are riding my bike, going swimming, playing soccer, riding horses and playing with my younger 4 year old sister, 3 year old brother, and my dog Katie.
