  Back to Kids' Voices Hannah

Hi! My name is Hannah. I was diagnosed with diabetes in April 1996. I was 21 months old at the time, now I am 7 years old. At first, controlling my diabetes was rough on me and my parents. I didn't know how to check my sugar or give myself shots at that age. Now I can do it myself, ONLY under supervision of my mom and dad.

I am writing this to let others know that diabetes is not at all bad. When I started public school, I then noticed I was different from the other kids. I was upset at first, then my mom told me I was special because God marks his special angels. My mark was having diabetes. I felt better after she told me this. My mom and dad come to my classroom every year to help others understand why I have to have snacks during class and help me look out for low blood sugar symptoms. They have a neat book they share with my friends and the class gets involved with my diabetes, so I am not in this disease on my own. I feel safe when I go to school now, because everyone knows what to do if I get low on the playground or in class.

At times I do get tired of checking my sugar and getting shots, but my doctor tells me the wonderful stuff researchers are coming up with to cure this disease. I can't wait!

If you are just told you have diabetes, don't get down in the dumps about it, because my mom and dad, along with the support group I am in, say "Diabetes Rock." It is only a bump to get over. When you start getting your sugars under control you are like every other kid in the world.

Now I am looking forward to going to camp for kids with diabetes, I heard from friends it's a great place to be. I help out by participating in Walk for a Cure in my community, and it is also a great way to meet new friends and share stories too.

I hope to meet more friends by sharing my story with you today. Take care and remember to monitor and eat healthy.

Love,
Hannah
