  Back to Kids' Voices Ricky

Hi! My name is Ricky and I am 6 1/2. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on June 14, 2002. The day I found out my brother and I were hanging out with our grandpa ( he is so fun ), and he decided to check my sugar since I was always thirsty and had to go to the bathroom a lot. The test Grandpa gave me came back positive, so my mom made me an appointment with my doctor, which he tested me and it came back positive as well. My doctor then sent me to the hospital to get my blood tested. A few hours later my results were back and my blood sugar level was over 500. I had to be admitted to the children's hospital so my parents could learn how to give me my shots. My mom was so scared to give me a shot, but she is ok now. I got to give my nurse a shot and that was way cool. I have to get 2 shots a day and four finger pricks. This made me very sad, especially when I found out this would never go away. But my mom and dad said I can still do all the things other kids do with the help of my shots. Were going to be ok.

I have a brother Austin ( 9 ) and two dogs Lucy and Casey. Some of the things I enjoy doing are playing soccer, computer games, video games, drawing and building with LEGOs. I hope I can go to a diabetes camp someday too, so I can meet other kids with diabetes. I am very excited about receiving e-mail from you :)

Let's keep praying for a cure!
Ricky
