My name is Laura. I was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago when I was 4 and a half. I will be 8 in December. I felt sick and very thirsty all the time, so my mom took me to the hospital and the doctors told us I had diabetes. We were all very scared. The finger pricks hurt at first, but now I'm used to them. It's not fun having diabetes, but I don't let it change my life. I just have to make sure that I eat healthy things, which is good for all of us.
I have an insulin pump that I got almost 1 year ago, so I don't have to have needles anymore. I didn't like needles at all, as they hurt me a lot and I never got used to them. I used to have problems keeping my blood sugar constant, and I had some hypoglycemic seizures in the middle of the night. It was very scary! When I have low sugars like that, it feels like someone is closing a big, black curtain on the world, and I can't stop them. The pump has helped me to maintain my blood sugars at a more constant level, and I feel a lot better.
I always think that I'm the only one in the world with diabetes. I don't know very many other kids who have diabetes, and I would like to meet some. I take Baton lessons, Jazz, Tap and Ballet, and I also like downhill skiing.
