Hello everyone. My name is Sara and I live in Canada. I am 13 years old and have had diabetes for two years. My life changed on September 10, 2001. It all started with the usual symptoms: thirst, I was tired, and of course, using the washroom A LOT! My mom noticed the symptoms early so I wasn't that sick. She made an appointment with our family doctor and asked if I could have a urine check for diabetes. Well, sure enough, I had ketones.
I cried all the way to the hospital not knowing what it was. I slept one night in the hospital and then was put to a huge hospital in Vancouver. I stayed there as an out patient for three days. It was tough learning everything since I had a booming head ache 24/7. But my family and I made it through. I have good blood sugar control since, but I do have a little too many lows. I'm not sure why though. I have had one minor setback--that was when I had to have my hep B shot. I wasn't even scared since I do needles everyday, but afterward I didn't feel good so I told my teacher and I was half way to the med room and I fainted in the hall. Luckily the nurse caught me and I soon woke up. I lied on the floor for a while though. But other than that I am fine and am very healthy.
I am on two shots a day and have been since I was diagnosed. I think I'm lucky because some people have to do 3, 4 or 5. I am looking at a pump and am hoping to get it this summer, though I haven't asked my doctor yet. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed!
I don't play much sports. I like riding horses and I like to cook. I ride every week and love it! In the past two years I have slept over at my closest friend's house. I am afraid that other people won't have food so I am very picky. I have stopped doing lots of things since I was diagnosed, but don't have much variety in my meals. Pretty much the exact same thing every day, and that is why I want the pump. I have been a little hard on myself these past two years. I hoping with all my heart I can get the pump. I am willing to learn whatever it takes. Thanks for reading my story. You can email me
