  Back to Kids' Voices Lillian

My name is Lillian. I'm almost 11 years old. I came from Detroit and moved to New York City in 1995. I was diagnosed on November 7, 2002.

I found out that I was sick because when I was at the doctor he said I caught the flu. But the next day I got worse. I went to the hospital and that's when I found I had type 1 diabetes. I stayed there about two weeks. Being diagnosed was scary for me because I had to take needles in my and poke my finger.

Having diabetes now is good and bad. In a sort of way, it is good now because I eat at all sorts of times. It is hard because people make fun of you and they may feel sorry for you.

I have to pike my finger and take medicine. I take Humalog and Lantus. I think all children have a right to know about diabetes, so they can make sure they don't eat too many sweets.

I like to do a lot of things. I like to sing and also dance. My favorite sport is basketball. I also like math and typing. My family is big. I have two parents, one sister and three brothers. They are Angel, Edwin, Julio and Lisa, who I admire very much. My parents are Braulio and Ivette. I am a wise and extraordinary person.

When I grow up I want to be like Selena and Christiana Aguilera. If that doesn't work, I want to be an FBI agent or a basketball player.

Sincerely,
Lillian
