Hi, I am Kristina and I would like to tell you about my story of diabetes. I am currently 12. I was diagnosed on July 5, 2002. I was having a lot of not feeling good problems. I also had bladder infections and so my mom took me to the doctor. The doctor said to have my blood taken. I went downtown to get my blood taken. When I got there they took my blood and said they would call me with the results.
One Saturday during the summer I went to Ikea to get this doll house that I had been wanting forever and my mom finally said I could get it. We were picking out the stuff for it and everything when the doctor called and said I needed to get down to the hospital because I had diabetes and my blood sugar was about 700. I was freaking out. My mom said she promised to get me the doll house but right then I needed to get to the hospital.
When I got there they had me eat a lot of sodium crackers and salt. I hated the food. I had to drink diet sodas and have my mom and dad practice giving me shots on an orange. My dad tried and scared me to death because he took the needle and lunged it into the orange. I said "no way no how are you going to do that to me." My mom didn't get how to measure the shots so I ended up doing it all by myself.
I have been taking care of my diabetes all by myself since I was diagnosed with it. I have been doing really good at it and almost everybody compliments me and says I'm really responsible and good at it. I always say why thank you and they smile and walk away.
It's kind of hard though when I'm at a birthday party and everyone is eating cake while I have to sit and plan how much insulin to do for it. When I finally am ready to eat everyone else is doing something else. I always feel sad when that happens but I always seem to get better right away. I never ended up getting that doll house and I feel like a piece of my heart's missing but I guess it's ok.
That is my story. I love to make new friends and I hope to make some friends by doing this. My email address is
