Mason was diagnosed with Type 1 in May of 2005 - Memorial Day weekend to be exact. He has an extensive medical history for such a young guy. In fact, if he develops any more major conditions, he'll have to wear two MedicAlert bracelets! At the time of diagnosis, he had just finished a 6-day round of Prednisone for a bad asthma attack. We thought the excessive thirst was a side effect of the steroid. In fact, I just mentioned it as an afterthought to his asthma doctor. She stopped everything and sent us directly to a lab for blood work and a urine sample. Within 24 hours, we were in the ER at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth getting our crash course in diabetes. What a weekend! To look at Mason, you would never know he has ever had any health issues. He's a big boy (about the size of an average 6-year-old), and he's full of energy. He loves to play outside - I think he'd live outside if we'd let him! He wrestles and plays soccer, baseball, football, tennis (anything involving a ball) with his 15-year-old brother, and he relentlessly tortures his 9-year-old sister. We had a tough time accepting his diagnosis. If it weren't for him being positive for 2 of the antibody markers, I still don't think we would believe the doctors. At the time, we're enjoying an incredible honeymoon period. I hope it never ends. Actually, that's the only thing the doctors have promised us - that the honeymoon WILL end.
