  Back to Kids' Voices Kaylee

Hi! My name is Kaylee. I am 7 years old and in the first grade. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes October 20, 2005. I had the flu and started drinking a lot and going to the bathroom a lot. I started getting very thin. My mom and dad knew something was wrong, so they took me to the doctor. It's a good thing they did, because the doctor said that if I hadn't gone that night, I would not have woken up the next morning. I spent 3 days in the hospital. I had just started Kindergarten and my teacher came to see me in the hospital. I also talked to my classmates via a conference call to tell them that I would be back to school soon.

I have gone to Camp Conrad-Chinnock, in the San Bernardino Mountains for the past two years. This year, I will be 8 years old and can go all by myself. My parents and step-brother went with me last year. It was so fun! I love seeing my old friends and making new ones. I have been on an Animas insulin pump for over a year now. I love it! It's not a cure, but it sure has changed my life. I take figure skating lessons, do cheerleading and play AYSO soccer. Diabetes will not keep me down. I can do anything other kids can do (and MORE).

I would like to hear from other kids who have diabetes and enjoy playing sports.

If you would like to contact me, please write to kayleesmum AT aol.com. I hope to hear from you soon.

Kaylee
