  Back to Kid' Voices Steven

Hi, my name is Steven. I am 14 years old. I live in Maryland. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 2 weeks before my 9th birthday in 2002. It all started when I got a nasty stomach virus right around my 8th birthday. It started off gradually, but over the course of the next year, I started showing the classic symptoms of diabetes. I lost about 15 pounds, and got so skinny you could literally see my ribs. Then there was the thirst. I was so thirsty, I drank soda after soda after soda...and I was still thirsty. In turn, I started having to use the bathroom a lot, another symptom. Finally, I got my blood drawn, and a few days later, the doctor called my mom and said my fasting blood sugar was 378 and I had diabetes. I spent 2 days at Children's Hospital in Washington DC. Obviously, I don't like having diabetes, but I guess it could be a lot worse. It usually doesn't stop me from things, and I try to stay positive with it.

Now, a little about me. I am going into 9th grade. I have an older brother who is 16 and going into 11th grade. I have a dog (a basenji) named Jessie. She is 6 years old. I love music, I listen to a lot of different kinds- rock, country, a little bit of rap, etc. I also like football, lifting weights, fishing, playing video games, and hanging out with my friends.

The picture in my profile is me with the sunfish I caught on my birthday this year. I love fishing, its really relaxing, and a lot of fun.

I will respond to any emails, no matter who you are. If you are newly diagnosed or have a child who is newly diagnosed, hang in there! I promise everything will be alright, no matter how tough it is at first.

Please email me at titan826 AT comcast.net .
