Back to Kid' Voices Gael

Hi my name is Gael Alexander and I'm 10 months old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on December 15, 2006.

I live in Texas with my mom and dad. My grandparents on my mom's side live one block away so I spend a lot of time with them.

I became very sick about a week prior to my diagnosis. I was drinking excessively, and peeing through all of my diapers, but I also had diarrhea on and off and my mommy needed to keep me hydrated. I just wasn't myself. I wouldn't play with my toys, and I cried every time my mom left my side. So, they took me to the doctor. That is when my mommy and daddy were told that I had type 1 diabetes. I was 9 months old when we found out.

After six hours in the emergency room they transferred me to the Children's Hospital about 20 minutes from where I live. The nurses and doctors were very sweet with me but, more importantly, they took care of my mommy and daddy. They made sure that my parents had a good understanding of my condition, and gave them plenty of information on diabetes. They showed my parents how to draw up insulin and give my shots. I stayed there for 6 days while they regulated my blood sugars with insulin.

When I got there, my blood sugar was over 900, and then they started the insulin. Once they got the insulin on board, it was only a matter of a few hours before my blood sugars dropped. It went to 375, and then 54. The nurses panicked and gave orange juice and apple juice. My blood sugar sky rocketed to 789. It seemed like the whole hospital was watching over me.

After my parents learned everything they need it to know, the doctor sent me home. Mommy and daddy where relieved that I was doing a lot better. My sugar levels are now supposed to be between 100-200 and I eat 6 times a day following a diet that was given to me by a dietitian. Mom and dad are really good at taking care of me and I give Thanks to God that I have such amazing parents.
