  Back to Kid' Voices Brooke

Hello my name is Brooke and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2008. I am 10 years old and I am in fourth grade.

I was so sick on January 16-18 and my mom and sister were sick too. My dad was in Seattle on a business trip for two weeks so he was not there. My mom was worried about me even though she was sick. She knew I was drinking too much and going to the bathroom and my skin was really dry and I was getting angrier each day because of my mood. My mom rushed me to the emergency room and they checked my blood sugar and it was 1000! I could not believe it. I was rushed into the room. They put me on four IVs! It hurt so much! I could not drink water for three whole days! Finally on my 6th day at the hospital I met a friend who had diabetes too. I was so happy to meet a friend. It brightened my day. I got some cards from my classmates. I was in second grade back then and was about 7 years old.

Now here I am living a normal life! I am happy to be on the pump! I now know so many friends with type 1 diabetes. I hope one day I will live a happy healthy life.
