  Back to Kid' Voices Nicholas

I'm Nicholas and I'm 8 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just before Christmas 2010. I was out shopping with my grandmother and out to dinner. I came home and vomited. That weekend I ate a lot and drank a lot of milk (2 gallons in a weekend).

My mom thought I had a stomach flu - but not by the way I was eating and drinking. Then I started to vomit and nothing would stay down. Since I didn't look too good, my mom took me to the doctor's office.

They thought I was dehydrated so they sent me to the hospital for some IV fluid. That was not the problem. I was admitted with DKA (means something like acid in the blood that shouldn't be there). They said I was diabetic and I had to give them my Mountain Dew that my mom gave me.

Now I test my own glucose and give myself injections. Oh and I can count my carbs too.

You can email my mom at .
