Hey! my name is Ellie. I'm 14, I was diagnosed with diabetes in June 2009, 2 years ago - just before my 12th birthday. I was feeling really ill for months before my diagnosis, and was drinking and going to the toilet a lot, so, my mum brought be a blood sugar tester, just to see what my sugars were. I used that for a few days, then I went to the doctor. The blood test said I had diabetes. But my doctor didn't send me to A & E , he said to see how it goes ... this was on a Friday, then on Sunday I did the Race for Life, and got McDonald's afterwards, thats when it all went wrong. I tested my sugars with the tester I had, and it said HI, so I went to A & E with my mum, dad and sister, and I got told I had diabetes. I stayed in Hospital for three days, my blood sugar was 45 mmol/l (810 mg/dl).
I had to learn how to give injections. I was on five injections a day. Then on June 14th 2011, I got an insulin pump. I love it! It's purple :) My sugars are so much better now, and I'm getting on fine with my diabetes :) It doesn't stop me from doing anything I want to do. :D I also hope to do the JDRF walk in September this year so I can raise money to help find a cure :D
A message to anyone who has just been diagnosed:
It's fine, it is always going to be really annoying at first, but it always gets better, it just becomes part of your life. I don't remember eating food and not having to do Injections and test my BS, even though it was only 2 years ago! It's fine, and not as bad as it seems. Im getting on fine with it now, I got used to it like just a few weeks after I was diagnosed.I'm always looking for other teenagers with diabetes to talk to, so e-mail me at .
Thank you for reading my story, and I'll always reply to any e-mails I get:D
P.S the picture is of me and my cousin on the beach a couple of weeks ago. I'm the one wearing the necklace. :)
