Hello my name is Rhonda and my son was diagnosed with diabetes in April 2004.
My son Micah told me that his heart did not like food and also he was dying. So I listened to my son and made a doctor's appointment for him, but he seemed to be getting sicker so I took him to the emergency room. The doctor told me that he was going to send me home and to wait until I was seen at the scheduled appointment, but I persuaded the doctor on call to go ahead and do a blood test. He found out that my son's blood sugar was 374. The doctor thanked me for persuading him to do the blood test and immediately had my son admitted to Naval Balboa Hospital that night.
We were seen the next morning by a team of doctors. They did not think my son had diabetes because of the way he was acting. They said he did not act like a child with diabetes. They thought he had gotten into something, like some kind of prescription drug, but unfortunately that was not the case at all -- he did in fact have diabetes. They told me they never seen any parent catch diabetes that early.
When we were discharged, he was in his honeymoon phase and did not need to take insulin. When they put him on insulin, his blood sugars bottomed out, so they decided to manage his diabetes by diet alone for a while. I was very happy that he did not have to take insulin and had some more time before he had to take it.
Well, three months later, my son had to go on insulin. I was very traumatized by the fact that they had to put him on insulin. I am doing much better now and getting used to the idea that he has to take insulin. He is doing better and gaining weight and feeling much better. I know I still have a long way to go in learning and adapting to a new way of life. I know as time goes on, things will get better. If any one would like to talk to me that has children with diabetes, it would be much appreciated. I can use the help in dealing and learning more about having a child with diabetes.
