How many times has your child attended diabetes summer camp?
Poll dates: March 7 - 14, 1999
Total Votes: 534
Summer camp for kids with diabetes provides an extraordinary learning experience for kids and parents alike. Kids with diabetes often meet, for the first time, other kids with diabetes. They share experiences and strategies for coping with diabetes. Sometimes you hear they learn how to "cheat." What they really are doing is learning how to keep their life as normal as possible.
While a child is away at camp, parents get a much needed break from the daily rigors of caring for a child with diabetes. Many parents are anxious about sending their child away. Camps have doctors or nurses -- and sometimes both -- on hand all the time to take care of the kids' diabetes. Counselors are trained in caring for kids with diabetes. Many counselors have diabetes or have relatives who do. For many parents, sending their child off to camp represents the first time they have not been completely responsible for their child's diabetes care. This is an important learning experience for parents too, since one day, their child will head off to live on their own.
