Have you trained a friend or relative to care for your child's diabetes in case you are unable to?
Poll dates: August 22 - 29, 1999
Total Votes: 559
Caring for a child with diabetes is not an easy task. Formal education provided by doctors and nurses when a child is diagnosed is just the beginning. Since each child is different, parents adapt general care theories to the particular needs of their child, and thus become the experts in the care their child needs.
Since children with diabetes are dependent upon their parents for the diabetes care, it's important for parents to teach someone else to care for their child in case they're unable to do so. Having a backup care giver also allows parents to take occasional breaks from diabetes care, even if it's just for a weekend getaway.
Even parents of teens will benefit from having someone else, other than themselves and their teen, know the basics of diabetes care.
