Do you or your child with diabetes consume foods or beverages that contain artificial sweeteners?

Poll dates: October 24 - 31, 1999

Prior to carbohydrate counting and fast acting insulin (Humalog), artificial sweeteners were the only way most people with diabetes were able to enjoy sweets and keep to their meal plan. Today, it's possible to incorporate just about any food or beverage into anyone's meal, as carbohydrates are covered with an appropriate amount of Humalog.

For many people, artificial sweeteners are an important part of their life. You need only walk down the soft drink aisle at any grocery store. People with diabetes often use artificial sweeteners, especially in soft drinks, to avoid huge infusions of carbohydrates. A typical sugar-sweetened soft drink contains around 50 grams of sugar per can. That's a lot!

In recent years, rumors have circulated on the Internet about a government and industry conspiracy to hide information about the toxicity of artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame) from the public. However, scientific studies do not support these claims.
