Have you or your child ever been tested for celiac?

Poll dates: January 27 - February 3, 2002
Total Votes: 737

Celiac syndrome is an autoimmune disorder triggered by cereal proteins, especially wheat gluten. It leads to malabsorption of all nutrients, primarily of fat. It can be detected by the presence of anti-transglutaminase antibodies. About 5% of people with autoimmune diabetes have positive anti-transglutaminase antibodies.

If you or your child have Type 1 diabetes, ask your diabetes team about getting a test for anti-transglutaminase antibodies.

This table compares the results of this poll with an identical poll conducted in July 2000:

Answer  2002   2000
Yes, positive 4% 3%
Yes, negative 16% 10%
No 38% 35%
Not sure 3% 3%
Don't know what celiac is 38% 46%
