Do you or your child use alternative site testing for blood glucose monitoring? Poll dates: January 19 - 26, 2003 Total Votes: 544 Frequent blood glucose monitoring is the foundation of diabetes management. Unfortunately, many people don't like to do finger sticks because they hurt. Manufacturers makers have responded with blood glucose meters that work with blood obtained from alternative sites that have fewer nerve endings, such as the forearm or palm. Obtaining blood from alternative sites is usually less painful than obtaining blood from fingertips, and therefore it's easier to do more frequent blood glucose monitoring. If you use alternative sites, you are cautioned to use finger tips instead if you feel low. This is because there is a time lag between blood glucose levels found in the finger tips and the blood glucose levels found in alternative sites. We last ran this poll in January 2002. In the past year, the number of people reporting that they use alternate site testing has remained the same at 36%. Only 5% of people report using a meter that isn't approved for alternate site testing, versus 13% last year. This shows that people are using newer meters that have been tested and approved for alternate site testing.
