The choice to start insulin pump therapy can be for many reasons. Some people want the schedule flexibility afforded by using a pump. Some like always having their insulin readily available, without having to carry a pen or syringe. Some people look for the reduced risk of hypoglycemia that has been documented in pump users. Some look for the better control which comes from the more predictable action of using only NovoLog or Humalog.
Regardless of the reason, people start pump therapy after using just about every insulin regimen imaginable. While this poll shows that more than half of the people were using four or more shots a day, over 40% were on three shots a day or less. If you find yourself looking for better control, or just more freedom, pump therapy is a viable option, even if you're only on two shots a day right now.
