Parents, how soon after your child's diagnosis did you begin going out again with just your spouse?

Caring for a child with diabetes is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week job. It's often very stressful, because even when you do everything right, blood sugars sometimes are too low or too high. Yet in spite of the enormous challenge of caring for a child with diabetes, married couples need to find time for themselves. They need to spend time away from diabetes, even if just for a couple hours a week.

During the summer, diabetes summer camp can offer a break for parents, while at the same time providing a great experience for kids. But what about other times of the year?

Finding an older babysitter, particularly a teen with diabetes, can help parents feel more comfortable about getting out of the house. With cell phones, and especially phones with text messaging capability, parents can keep in touch with their babysitter and keep informed about blood glucose readings. For example, a babysitter can send a text message with blood glucose values to the parents throughout the night. That way parents can enjoy some time away without worrying quite as much about what's happening at home. (Be sure to put your phone on silent during the movie!) Our Family Support Network can help you find a babysitter near you. And if you're willing to babysit, please become part of the Family Support Network to help out other parents near you.

Regardless of how you do it, it's important for parents to take some time to themselves every now and then, to recharge themselves, and to keep their marriage healthy.

The results of this poll are very similar to the same poll we ran last year.
