How do you think type 1 diabetes will be cured first?
Poll dates: January 1 - 8, 2006
Total Votes: 511Scientists, engineers, and doctors from around the world are working hard to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Some are working on bio-artificial techniques, such as implanted, continuous glucose monitors that control an insulin pump. Some are working on find ways to eliminate the need for toxic immunosuppressant drugs in islet cell transplants. Some are working on gene therapy to convert cells in the body to produce insulin, or to create a larger supply of islet cells for transplant. Some are working on drugs to alter the immune system to eliminate the underlying autoimmunity of type 1 diabetes. Some are working on vaccines to prevent people from getting type 1 diabetes in the first place.
While it is difficult to know which path will lead to a cure first, we all have reason to be hopeful that one or more of these paths will lead to a significant improvement in how we care for type 1 diabetes in the near future. With that in mind, the best advice we can offer our children and anyone with type 1 diabetes is to take the best possible care today so that you will be as healthy as possible when new treatments are available.
As in previous polls on this topic, more people think that there will be a technological "cure" than a biological cure.
