Has your child's relationship with their grandparents changed since diagnosis?
Poll dates: June 11 - 18, 2006
Total Votes: 390For some kids, the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes changes not only their life and the lives of their parents, but it also changes their relationships with their grandparents. In this week's poll, about one-third of readers report no change, and about 45% report a change -- with about one-third each reporting less involvement, more involvement, or mixed.
For parents, having grandparents around to take the kids every now and then can be a big help. Some grandparents are comfortable learning about diabetes care, while some are anxious. There are many excellent books about diabetes that can be very helpful, including the superb new book by Dr. Peter Chase, A First Book for Understanding Diabetes.
No matter how you do it, keeping kids with diabetes involved with their grandparents is an important part of making sure that our kids live as much as possible as if they don't have diabetes.
We last ran this poll in June 2004 with nearly identical results.
