For how long do you use a vial of insulin?

Poll dates: November 5 - 12, 2006
Total Votes: 549

Children with diabetes often use very little insulin. While insulin makers recommend discarding an opened vial of insulin after one month, parents -- and adults with type 1 diabetes -- often find themselves wondering why they're throwing out what looks like perfectly good insulin.

About one in five respondents (21%) report using a vial of insulin for more than four weeks, down from 59% in 1999 and 26% in November 2005.

If you find unexplained high blood sugar levels after using a vial of insulin for four weeks, you should discard it because the insulin may no longer be effective.

This table compares the results of this poll with the previous results:

Answer   Nov 2006   Nov 2005   Mar 1999
Less than 1 week   5%   1%   1%
1 to 2 weeks   11%   12%   5%
2 to 3 weeks   15%   15%   5%
3 to 4 weeks   46%   41%   26%
4 to 6 weeks   16%   19%   26%
More than 6 weeks   5%   7%   33%

Looking at this more closely, we see an eight day decrease in the number of days that people use a vial of insulin since March 1999. Assumptions are shown in vial days per vote.
