Have you or your child ever been tested for celiac?

Poll dates: May 25 - June 1, 2008
Total Votes: 460

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by cereal proteins, especially wheat gluten. It leads to malabsorption of all nutrients, primarily of fat. It can be detected by the presence of anti-transglutaminase antibodies. About 5% of people with autoimmune diabetes have positive anti-transglutaminase antibodies.

Over the past years, the number of people indicating that they don't know what celiac is has decreased substantially, from 46% to just 6%. That's good, since celiac is more common in kids with type 1 diabetes than the general population. If you or your child has type 1 diabetes, ask your diabetes team about getting a test for anti-transglutaminase antibodies. It's simple and can be done during your quarterly diabetes team visit.
