How much of a financial burden does paying for all of your diabetes supplies place on your family?

Poll dates: July 15 - 22, 2009

Caring for type 1 diabetes is an expensive endeavor. Essential medical supplies, such as glucose test strips, lancets, syringes or pump supplies, and insulin cost many thousands of dollars per year and are non-optional. While many industrialized countries in the world provide national health care coverage that includes diabetes supplies, the United States does not. A family caring for someone with diabetes is therefore at the mercy of their company's health insurance plan to help pay for these supplies, and many families have no coverage at all.

25% of our readers report that paying for diabetes supplies places a high, very high, or extremely high burden on their family finances -- essentially the same as last year (2008). A little less -- 20% -- report experiencing a modest burden. That means that, for about half of our readers, paying for diabetes supplies places a measurable burden on their family.
