When do you think that type 1 diabetes will be cured? The word 'cure' means different things to different people, but think about what it means to you when you answer Within the next 5 years 4% 7 Within the next 10 years 21% 41 Within the next 20 years 27% 52 More than 20 years from now 18% 34 Never 21% 41 I don't know 9% 18

When my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in September 1989, we were told that science would likely have a cure within 10 years. Over the years, I've heard that statement repeated many times -- that is, science will likely find a cure for type 1 diabetes within 10 years. Cynics would note that, even today, the cure remains 10 years away. Optimists would cite the enormous progress that has been made over the years and that we're closer than ever to finding a cure.
As we noted in our January 2010 poll asking about how diabetes will be cured, doctors, scientists, and engineers around the world are working on many ways to cure type 1 diabetes. We tend to think that the "cure" will first come from a closed loop pump (both 38%), rather than some kind of biological intervention.
While no one can say for sure when a cure for type 1 diabetes will be widely available, there is every reason to be optimistic that we will see dramatic improvements in how type 1 diabetes is managed in the relatively near future.
Over the past several years, the trend has been for CWD visitors to think that the cure is farther away, as can be seen by the following graph -- the peak around "within 10 years" has dropped dramatically:
