Do you or your child reuse lancets, syringes/pen needles, pump supplies, or continuous sensors?
Poll dates: July 20 - 27, 2011
Total Votes: 273
In previous years, we've asked our readers about reusing lancets and syringes. In this poll, we also asked about pump supplies and continuous sensors. The data from this year shows:
| Reuse | 88% | 27% | 13% | 61% |
| Don't Reuse | 12% | 73% | 87% | 39% |
As would be expected, the vast majority of people report reusing lancets (88%). Syringe reuse is much less common at 27%. Reuse of pump supplies is even less -- 13%.
Reuse of sensors from continuous glucose monitors, which we defined as using a sensor beyond the recommended time limit, is also high. Almost two-thirds of people who use continuous sensors report using the sensors longer than recommended. With clinical trials and unpublished data from clinicians showing that sensors last longer than noted on product packaging, and given the expense of these sensors, it is not surprising that so many people report using them for extended periods of time.
The following graph summarizes the results of this year's poll:
