In a perfect world, children and adults with diabetes would never face discrimination. They would never worry about being denied the ability to check blood sugars or inject insulin at school, never worry about being told they cannot go on a field trip because no one would watch over them, they would never worry about finding health insurance, they would never worry about not getting a job. But in reality, many people face this kind of discrimination everyday.
In our poll, almost two-thirds of our readers (62%) report experiencing no discrimination. An additional 21% say they experience some discrimination but that it really doesn't impact their lives. So the good news is that a wide majority of our readers (83%) report living without any seriously negative discrimination because of their diabetes.
Unfortunately, the bad news is that 10% of our readers report experiencing discrimination that impacts their lives, and 4% report that the discrimination impacts them a lot. Children often face challenges at school, where 504 Plans can help to make a difference. The American Diabetes Association also works to fight discrimination against children and adults with diabetes.
