More and more CWD families are reporting being forced to switch insulins by their insurance company. This practice, called non-medical switching, can result in problems for kids and adults with type 1 diabetes. We have heard from families whose child has had unexplained high and low blood glucose levels or reduce insulin pump infusion set wear time after being forced to switch insulins. Others report being surprised when they arrive at the pharmacy to pick up their insulin and discover that it's no longer covered by their insurance plan.
CWD is involved with a group of diabetes advocacy organizations that is investigating the prevalence and impact of non-medical switching on families living with type 1 diabetes. If you have experienced non-medical switching, please share your experience with us via email at .
