International Youth Diabetes Leaders Share Best Practices

MILLVILLE, PA – On October 6, 2005, youth representatives from diabetes camps throughout the world gathered at Camp Victory for the DCA's "Camp Depot", a four-day conference for staff serving children, teens and families affected by diabetes. Over 90 youth leaders traveled to participate from Brazil, England, Spain, Mexico, Bermuda, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Canada and many regions of the United States.

In the wake of AYUDA Inc.'s Campo Amigo Ecuador '05, a weeklong camp for Ecuadorian youth with diabetes, Camp Depot, orchestrated by the Diabetes Camping Association, AYUDA Inc., and Setebaid Services, was held at Camp Victory, host site for the Harrisburg Diabetic Youth Camp, an annual summer event for more than 80 children from the surrounding area.

"This international exchange occurs at a time when issues of health care and global responsibility are increasingly critical. Meeting the challenges faced by youth with diabetes requires increased collaboration within the diabetes community and an expansion of volunteers' roles in building this community throughout the world" said Jesse Fuchs-Simon, President of AYUDA Inc.

The Keynote speech entitled "The Foundations of Leadership" featuring Chris, Thurber, PHD promoted the value of the diabetes camping experience for youth. Dennis Wolff, guest speaker, and Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture spoke of the importance of the camp experience for children with disabilities. In addition to having the opportunity to listen to medical and camping professionals speak, the conference featured discussions as well as breakout sessions, which allowed participants the opportunity to exchange ideas on relevant topics and network with other diabetes camp organizers from around the world

Mark Barone, Asociacion Diabetes Juvenil, ADJ representative, added, "Camp Depot has been an incredible learning experience and I will bring many new tools and ideas from Pennsylvania back to help improve my program in Brazil."

AYUDA has provided support to diabetes communities throughout the Americas for more than 12 years. Campo Depot marks the third annual international diabetes conference supported by AYUDA. In the coming year AYUDA plans to expand its services into Belize.
