The Edwards Family - Rondebosch, Cape Town, South Africa
Rowena Edwards, 8 years old
Diagnosed on 29 May 2000 at age 5
26 July 2003
Rufus was dropped off by Martine today.Rowena enjoyed changing his clothes and we read some of the recent diary entries. He sat in a doll's high chair at the table and enjoyed his oats. He met many other soft animals and dolls, and the photo to the right shows him amongst them. After meals and several times a day he jumped on the trampoline with Rowena -- this kept their sugar levels under 10.
Rufus came with us in the car to pick videos and then he watched "The Rat Race" and "My Dog Skip" on the couch. Big brother Bernard (13) & Rowena were keen on injecting Rufus but reported giving an overdose -- luckily they knew how to revive him!
Rowena is in Grade 3 at Oakhurst Girls and the whole school is busy preparing for their school play "Oakhurst goes Poppins" -- Rowena is a penguin.
She has some form of PE three times a week, takes recorder, and there are always several bits and pieces for projects to carry along to school, as well as remembering to take and eat a Bettasnack oat choc digestive biscuit whenever action is a long time before or after mealtimes, therefore Rufus stayed at home during school hours.
Rowena tests herself 3-4 times a day and does some of the injecting. Her sugar levels are fairly good as long as there is some form of exercise every day. Her Hba1c is 7% at present (June reading).
She is keen on doing the Blisters for Bread Charity walk in Greenpoint/Seapoint at the end of August. Last year she easily managed 5km (mostly running) so this year it will be 10km together with Bernard, her Dad Ray, and half a Lunch Bar every 5kms!
Rowena would like to meet Ruby Bear as well sometime. Well, the time has flown and now Rufus needs to go to the next family on the list. Goodbye Rufus, and have lots of wonderful adventures.
Alison (mom), Ray (dad), Bernard & Rowena.
