Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Weibel Family

The Weibel Family - Table View, Cape Town
Brittany - Age 5 1/2
Diagnosed - 1 1/2 Years Ago On 8th January 2002

Sunday 15 June 2003
Today Rufus arrived at the Weibel family in Table View, Cape Town! He spent a bit longer than expected with Suzaan in Stellenbosch, but was warmly welcomed by Brittany & family. Brittany couldn't get down the stairs quick enough when she heard he had arrived!!! Rufus said hello to the whole family including Bradley, Brittany's 8 year old brother, as well as Tiffany their dog. Later in the evening Rufus joined the family to go & watch a movie. In the evening Brittany tucked Rufus in his own little bed next to hers. Our first day with him went so quick!!

Being a public holiday, the kids didn't go to school today. Mommy & Brittany gave Rufus a good clean - which he was grateful for. Brittany took Rufus and her other dolls for a picnic in the garden since it was such a lovely sunny day. Later Daddy took Tiffany for a walk around the block and Bradley, Brittany and Rufus (of course) came along on their bicycles. In the afternoon the family went to play soccer with their friends and Rufus thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Afterwards our friends joined us at home for something to drink & they enjoyed looking at Rufus' diaries. What an exciting time he's had so far!! Brittany's readings have been so good today - probably because she's been so active.

Rufus went with Brittany to her school today - Bloubergrandt Pre-Primary. Her teacher, Mrs Van Gent, explained to the kids what Rufus was all about. Mrs Van Gent's mother is also a diabetic. Needless to say, all the girls wanted to hold Rufus. Mommy took a picture of the class with Rufus which she plans to add to his dairy.

After a busy day yesterday, Rufus decided to sleep in a bit. After Brittany returned from school, Mommy - a qualified reflexologist - gave Bradley, Brittany and Rufus a foot treatment. In the evening we all cuddled up as usual on Mommy and Daddy's bed for our bedtime stories. This week is going far too quickly!!!

Thursday 19 June 2003
Brittany decided that Rufus needs something suitable to sleep in, so she donated a babygrow from one of her dolls to serve as pajamas. We also covered his box for his diaries. Brittany almost looks forward to her injections now, since she can give Rufus his injections too. Sometimes when Brittany complains about her injections, Mommy & Daddy remind her that soon, when God changes the earth back into a paradise, we will dig a huge hole and throw all our insulin, injections, glucometers, asthma pumps (Bradley gets asthma) and all the other medicine into the hole. Then we'll set it alight - because we'll never need it again!! As the Bible promises: "No resident will say: 'I am sick'." (Isaiah 33:24) This always brings a little smile to our brave little girl's face!

Friday 20 June 2003
What an exciting day! Firstly, my class went on an outing to a company that makes props for movies and TV ads. We went to see a huge elephant they're busy making for a movie. Mommy took some pictures which we'll include in Rufus' diary (he went with of course!). The people also showed us some skeletons, sharks, crocodiles, penguins and other things we'd recognized from the TV ads. At lunch time when Mommy and I picked Bradley up from school, my reading was very low - 2.1! For about half an hour Mommy battled to get my reading under control. Needless to say her nerves were shot by the time I felt better. Then after lunch a man from the local newspaper - Table Talk - came to interview us. Mommy felt very brave and phoned them a day or 2 earlier and told them about Rufus. The editor's wife said it's about time people get to know a bit more about diabetes. So my cousin, Paige Viljoen, and her mom and brother also came for the interview. Paige is also a diabetic and Rufus will be going to her next. Maybe Paige will include the newspaper article in the diary when Rufus visits her next week. Mommy asked the photographer if the boys could sit in for the picture, since they sometimes feel a bit left out. After all, their chances are 1 in 20 to get diabetes too. So, slow down on those sweets, Bradley!!

Saturday 21 June 2003
Brittany is already upset because Rufus has to go to her cousin, Paige, in a few days' time. She is convinced nobody else can look after Rufus as well as she did the last few days. Mommy explained that Rufus also has to comfort other kiddies with diabetes, but she can see that saying goodbye is going to be very hard!

Sunday 22 June 2003
After our Bible meeting at the Kingdom Hall we went to Ouma and Oupa for an unexpected braai. Mommy told Ouma that she's thinking of getting Brittany her own 'diabetic' teddy bear for they can see that parting with Rufus is going to be very difficult.

Monday 23 June 2003
Rufus had to go and say goodbye to Brittany's class today. Brittany has really looked after Rufus very well. We are sure Rufus will bring a lot of comfort to all the other special diabetic kiddies he meets. Our whole family hopes to see him again!
