Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Young Family

The Young Family, Tedderfield, South Africa

Rufus has spent the last week with us. We are the Young family, which consists of Jessica, (7 years old, diagnosed 11 May, 1999), Andrea (16), Ryan (14), Ashleigh (11), mom (Cathy) and dad (Kevin). We live on a small holding (7 acres) on the outskirts of Johannesburg called Tedderfield. There are lots of animals on the farm, miniature horses, sheep, goat, rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys and not to forget our 17 Saint Bernard dogs! Yes, we breed, and show Saint Bernard dogs and Jessica is a keen participant in this sport, so it will not surprise you to know that the highlight of Rufus's visit was to attend a dog show.

Tuesday 10th September, 2002
We fetched Rufus today. There was lots of delight and excitement, as we had not told Jessica it was her turn to have Rufus stay with her. She proudly carried him and his little green suitcase into the house and introduced him to her family. Jessica does her own testing and injections under supervision and was happy to include Rufus in her daily routine.

Wednesday 11th September, 2002
Rufus spent the morning at Granny's house, where he was measured up for his new blue jersey and matching scarf. Then there was a trip to the local spar to buy the daily goods and back to the plot where he rode bikes and played with the puppies.

Thursday 12th September, 2002
Rufus made a quick visit to the class for introductions, and he was invited to come and spend a whole day at school to allow more classes to meet him.

Friday 13th September, 2002
Today Jessica took Rufus to school for the whole day and they had an exhilarating day. When they got home we had to wash and blow dry four of the dogs, Balu (3 ½), Aramis (1), Kitty (4) and Willow (11 months). The weather had been cold and windy all week, and we were worried we would have to wash the dogs in the bathroom. Luckily the African sun came out and shone all day, and the process took place all day in the garden, during which Rufus was placed in the shade of the big cherry tree to watch.

Saturday 14th September, 2002
Today we were up early grooming and packing. The dogs climbed into the trailer and we were off to Vereeniging, which was about 50km away. Rufus was dressed warmly in his new jersey and scarf. We arrived at the show after it had already started, weaved our car through all the other trailers and found a good spot near our ring. We then unpacked all the chairs, cooler box, umbrella, and set up. Jessica then took Rufus and introduced him to everyone. He met all the other saints and lots of other dogs.

Sunday 15th September, 2002
Rufus had a quiet day today and other than feeding the farm animals and brushing the horse, Princess, most of his day was spent in Jessica's room with the other teddies, although he did have a ride on Jessica's bike just before supper.

Monday 16th September, 2002
Jessica had the pleasure of taking Rufus to the headmaster and the staff room where she explained to everyone about Rufus and his journey around South Africa. Mrs. Rose, Jessica's teacher, was keen to look through Rufus' diary with Jess and took photos for the school magazine-memories! It was Rufus' last day with us today and we want to thank him for coming to visit us. You gave Jessica more happiness than you can imagine, and we wish you well on your journey.
