Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Arsky Family

The Arsky Family, Oslo, Norway

Welcome to Norway, Rufus!

14.7.01:
Rufus arrived at Hovseter post office just in time to come with Nadia to our cabin in the Norwegian forest/countryside. He sat well secured on Nadia's lap all the way to Dokka. Rufus marveled at the sight of snowy mountains and he enjoyed the fresh air along Randsfjorden, a 75 kilometers long lake. Rufus participated in grocery shopping in Dokka before we arrived at Vesletun, our cabin.

Here Rufus met Nadia's Mommo (Grandmother) and Mommo's cousin Kari. Nadia showed Rufus all the best places to play: in the playhouse, in the swing and in the strawberry field. Nadia (7) and her little brother Johannes (5) have entertained Rufus all day, even though he probably is very tired. Rufus joined us at a barbecue, and he seemed very pleased to taste a Norwegian potato "lompe", a flat soft bread to wrap around a hot dog. Rufus passed on the hot dog, though. Luckily Rufus also was a no-go for the eager mosquitoes here.

Good night, Rufus, see you when I test Nadia at 11 pm! (Rufus & Nadia were 18 (300) at 8 pm). Good you have a pump!

15.7.01:
After a good night's sleep, both Nadia and Rufus woke to a constant down pouring of rain. We had to stay inside most of the day - but we had visitors! Our neighbors form Oslo came and joined us for lunch. Nadia proudly showed them Rufus and his journal. Rufus also began his diabetes awareness education in Norway by demonstrating what a pump is. For although our neighbor is an anesthesiologist and actually provided us with the very urine stix that unveiled Nadia's diabetes two years ago, he doesn't know the first thing about diabetes. Rufus got to play with Espen (6), Jens (4) and Ingrid (2), and enjoyed it. He is a charming bear!

When Nadia got her bedtime shot today, she acted low even though she was 6 (100). Rufus was fine though, so I only had one tearful, mad and troubled diabetic to attend to. After the ordinary meal + extra yogurt and oatmeal, Nadia finally fell asleep. When I measured at 11 pm, Rufus and Nadia both were very moist and they both lay on their stomachs. And - they both were low… at 3.4 (60). So I gave more low fat yogurt with oatmeal and will measure again soon. The only possible explanation is I hit a blood vessel so the insulin worked extra fast… Thank God we do nighttime testing! Good night to the both of you, Nadia & Rufus!

16.7.01:
Today Rufus has "made" Dokka town! It is always a pleasure to go shopping there, and now Nadia showed Rufus around. He has also been portrayed by Nadia's granny, Mommo, and the very flattering portrait is now framed & waiting for a place on the wall. We have spent most of the day cleaning out lots of old stuff from the cabin and taking it to the dump. Rufus has had a very laid-back attitude towards the whole project, and now he sleeps next to Nadia who has "exercised" by throwing stuff in the dump. Good night to the two of you, best buddies!

17.7.01:
Rufus was eager to go to Oslo, so we packed our bags and went. We took a very scenic road over the hills, and Rufus was surprised to see both sheep and young cattle in the middle of the dirt road. We went by the Oslo Gardermoen International Airport to pick up Nadia's dad and little sister Susanna. They have spent 6 days in Finland where dad is from.

Back home we were pleased to see that Rufus hit it off with Nadia's Ruby instantly. He is truely a "pikenes Jens" (women's man) as we say in Norwegian. Both Nadia's and Rufus' bs was 6 (95), even though we were 2 hours past supper.

18.7.01:
Rufus sent out a press release to all the local newspapers in both Oslo and Dokka. Wonder if we get publicity? The rep from Bayer mailed us and made an appointment for the amusement park on Friday. Cool!

In the evening we went shopping for a stereo for Nadia's dad. It was dinnertime, and Rufus and Nadia both were hungry. We figured that Rufus might be missing the Netherlands, Tobey & Leslie, so we took him to a Dutch pancake house at idyllic old Bærums Verk. We measured, and Juha (dad) gave Nadia and Rufus a shot of 1 u reg.

We ordered "salty" pancakes: with bacon for Nadia & Rufus, with ham & cheese for Johannes and Susanna, with veggies for mom and pancake a la Vincent van Gogh for dad. The kids (and Rufus?!) were astonished to see pancakes without sugar/jam/jello. But it went down very well!

Good night, cuddly bear! We'll read "Rufus comes home" tonight!

19.7.01:
Rufus has been sightseeing today! First he went with Ruby, Nadia, Johannes, Susanna and mom to see the papyrus boat Ra II and the balsa raft Kon-Tiki made by the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl. Rufus was impressed by the fact that these humble "boats" have sailed across the Pacific and the Atlantic!

Afterwards we went to the Viking ships, all three of them a 1000 years old and darkened with age. Rufus got a pin and a postcard. Now Rufus is a true Viking! He celebrated by having bread, fruit yogurt and diet pop in the car. Tomorrow is our big day with Bayer, so have a good night's sleep!

20.+ 21.7.01:
Bayer Norway sponsored a trip to TusenFryd (Thousand Joys), the fun fair 20 kilometers south of Oslo. We went with Rufus, Ruby, Nadia, Johannes, Susanna, Juha (dad), Gunn Helene (mom) Ole Kristian (from Bayer), Jonathan (3, his son) and Thore, a reporter from the Diabetes magazine in Norway. Rufus had a great time!

We got beautiful weather, and the kids were hot. The non-D kids got slush, but for Nadia I invented a new treat: Shave ice + diet coke! It worked, and Nadia was thrilled to get something similar, but sugar free!

After the fun fair we took Rufus to a Sony store and bought a new TV set for Nadia's Mommo (granny). Then we took the TV, Nadia and Rufus to her because the lucky two should sleep over. Mommo got an instruction covering two pages in what to do/give/test at different times during the next 15 hours. Although the pre-dinner numbers were fine (6, 100) the exciting day made Nadia's and Rufus' bs go low both before supper ( 3, 50) and also at 10.30 pm (also 3). So Mommo gave the repair food (and I told her to give quite much to aviod further lows) - so Nadia and Rufus were 18 (300) at breakfast the 21.7.01.

Now, after a splendid trout dinner it is time for Saturday candies + chips, and TV. But we see that departure is nearing, and Nadia won't let Rufus go…

22.7.01:
This is the last day in Norway, and we are all sad to see you go, Rufus, but we know you'll have a great time in Lappeenranta with Niko, Iina, Atte & Pinki! Bye, little bear! Miss you already!
