The Pereira Family, Elizabeth, New Jersey
February 2, 2002
Rufus is in Elizabeth, N.J. with Joe (dad), Dina (mom), Johnnathan (11 years old, diagnosed 3/24/00) and Brianna (5 years old) Pereira. Today is cold so all we did was look at all the great things in Rufus' box. Brianna showed Rufus grandma's place, and we also took him to meet Aunt Mildred and family. Dad works late, so when he got home everyone was in bed. Rufus slept with Brianna and our Rufus, too.

Johnnathan went to CCD from 9-11 a.m. Brianna took care of Rufus. She checked his blood glucose and made sure he bloused before every meal. We do not know how to use the pump, but Rufus does. Our Rufus still takes shots three times a day. Brianna, both Rufuses, and mom picked J up from church. We took pictures and gave Rufus a last name. Ours is Rufus Pereira and the other is Rufus World. J went with Dad to paint the clubhouse. Brianna, Rufus, and Mom went to Katerina's skating birthday party. Later that day, the family got together once again at Europe Restaurant with a few friends for the Super Bowl. Kayla (2 years) loved Rufus and didn't want to give him up, not even when she left. J was worried that Rufus wouldn't come back in time for dinner, but he did. Kayla's mom was able to sneak out of the house with him. We stayed out late and everyone was tired when we got home. The kids went straight to bed but Rufus stayed up with Dad. He ended up sleeping in the living room with Rufus P.

Mom has been sick, so Rufus has been taking care of her. He has also done homework with the kids and watched tv with dad. He has met with other family members that have come to visit, too. Both Rufuses slept with J these past few days.

Brianna went to dance school and J went to piano class tonight. Rufus and Mom stayed at dance school since J has a double piano class today. All the girls wanted to play with Rufus, so he got to dance with them for a bit. Brianna told everyone that our visitor has diabetes just like J. Rufus met the owner of the dance school whose mom has diabetes. She has a lot of questions about the pump and what Rufus was doing in his travels.

We are off to dance school this morning. Brianna has ballet, tap, and tumbling today, and J has his first hip hop class. Brianna does hip hop on Fridays. After dropping off the kids, Rufus and Mom went on a job interview. Rufus didn't go inside; he just watched from the car and kept his fingers crossed. Mom and Rufus made it back just in time to see J dance. We think he did a great job!

J played hooky from CCD, so the family and Rufus could go see a small circus that came into town. There are no animals, but they do have funny clowns and other wonderful tricks for the children. We had a good time! A clown painted Brianna's face and Dad bought her a giant ant balloon. J and Rufus, Mom, and J shared a caramel apple, while Brianna and Dad had popcorn. We also shared cotton candy and drank soda. J and Rufus had to drink bottled water because there was no diet. Poor Rufus got all wet when Mom spilled her soda. He needs a bath! After the circus, we went to cousin Steven's house for his 14th birthday party. After dancing, playing video games, and eating, we had a guest. The guest was a clown who spoke both English and Spanish. The reason that the clown spoke both English and Spanish is because Aunt Gaby and other family members only speak Spanish and Portuguese.
The clown told us he could only stay for an hour because he had to visit his friends at the circus. The clown wanted to give Rufus to a little girl at the party who won a game. Mom stepped in and explained that Rufus was a visitor and was leaving soon. The clown loved Brianna's clown face and wanted her to go with him, but J said no. When the clown left, J and Rufus checked their blood glucose so they could eat cake. Rufus was fine all day and he bloused every time he would eat. J was over 300 at the circus, so we gave him Humalog to cover everything he was eating. By the time we ate the cake, J was at 199, not bad, but we want the pump. This was a long day, so we all went to bed by 8:30. Rufus took a bath!

Went to the endo today and Rufus went along. Rufus met Dr. Ellen and Therese, who is the social worker at Joslin in Livingston, NJ. We took pictures, told the story, and they looked in the box. Tonight is the last night with Rufus. We have kept him long enough. Brianna wanted Rufus to sleep with her and our Rufus. J said it was fine with him, but he wanted to help get the box ready.
