The Chaney Family, Valdosta, Georgia
March 7, 2003
Rufus has arrived at the Chaney house. Ginna (diagnosed age 3 years) was so excited to see Rufus. Her grandparents came over to watch her open the box. Wow! We were all excited to see what Rufus brought with him. We were surprised to see Rufus was not pumping when he arrived. Ginna started pumping in September 2002 at age 4. She loves having her pump. Tonight is family night. Rufus arrived in time to go out for supper and go bowling with Ginna. Ginna and Rufus' blood sugars were 124 (Ginna) and 100 (Rufus) before we ate. Great! Ginna and Rufus had a wonderful time bowling and were ready for bed when we got home. Rufus and Ginna got to sleep with Daddy and Mommy.

This morning, Ginna gave Rufus a shot for breakfast. She said Rufus needed a pump because he did not like shots. So, we made Rufus a pump so he could be like Ginna. Rufus went to the park for a birthday party. He loved swinging and sliding and see-sawing and riding the horse. Ginna and Rufus enjoyed ice cream and chips and cake. Ginna loves having Rufus here. He has been a great comfort to her.
Tomorrow we will take Rufus to church and he will get to meet all of Ginna's friends there. We are all glad to have Rufus here in Valdosta, Georgia! (We are buying Ginna a different Rufus because she loves him so much. Ginna cried today and does not want Rufus to go away. But Rufus will leave in a few days to comfort another family. We hope to see Rufus again.)

Today we went to church and Rufus met all of our church family there. Ginna liked showing him off. Rufus learned about Jesus while he was at church. He learned that Jesus loves him (and so do we). After church, Ginna and Rufus ate lunch and took a little nap.

Ginna and Rufus had a site change today. The most exciting part of the day was Rufus got to go to school with Ginna. She loved telling everyone about Rufus. Today Ginna was low and Rufus helped her drink her juice. Sometimes Ginna doesn't like to drink juice and needs a little help letting her know it will make her feel better.

Ginna still loves having Rufus with us. Rufus has helped Ginna understand she is not the only one with diabetes. Ginna will be receiving her own Rufus in a few days. We are excited about that! Ginna and Rufus are learning how to work their pump. They have learned how to 'suspend' the pump and take it off to get in the shower.

We have had Rufus for quite awhile now. We have been waiting for our hometown news crew to come and interview Rufus and Ginna. We want others to be aware of diabetes and to see what it is like living with diabetes. We thank Rufus for all of his support and comfort he has brought to us. Most of all we thank God for watching over Ginna and Rufus and helping them cope with having diabetes. We will all miss you, Rufus. Have fun at your visit to the next home. We love you. Hope to see you again.
