The Quirk Family, New South Wales, Australia
Thursday 14th June 2001
After travelling right across the Pacific Ocean Rufus arrived in Sydney, Australia and the Quirk family. Alex (8) and Emily (9.5 dx'd at 2.5) were so thrilled to open up the FedEx parcel. Alex cuddled up with Rufus and Emily's Ruffi in his special chair.

Emily is in the Australian Girls Choir and Rufus went with her to the choir weekend and met all her friends in the choir. He was most impressed with the girls' activities and they were really interested in Rufus.
Sunday 17th June 2001
Rufus went with mum and Alex to church where mum sang in the choir. In the afternoon we went bowling.
Monday 18th June 2001
Mum went to Melbourne to attend the funeral of Danielle Albesi, the daughter of Sue who is on the International Board of the JDRF. Danielle died of kidney failure and was only 31. We had special prayers for Danielle tonight.

I have really enjoyed my week with Rufus. Today was the best day of all because Rufus came to school. Rufus met the school nurse who gives Emily her insulin each day at lunchtime. There are four children with diabetes in Emily's primary school, including one other girl in her class who was diagnosed this year. One of the children, Joey, has a pump.
Friday 22nd June 2001
Emily went on a school excursion to see how newspapers are made at the Fairfax plant at Chullora. It was very impressive to see the big reels of newsprint. Dada met the class at lunchtime so Emily could have her insulin at the right time. At night-time we had dinner at a restaurant (the children had steak and chips) and then went to school for the Chapel Concert. Alex sang in the boys' choir and played the violin in junior string orchestra.
Saturday 23rd June 2001
This was such a busy day! First we went to netball and Emily's team won their first match of the season - so Rufus brings good luck. Then into the city for some shopping and then across the Harbour Bridge to the zoo. Rufus met lots of animals - he really liked the koalas and the otters and the meerkats. He wasn't so sure about the cheetahs but thought the Kodiac bear was pretty interesting.

Today was very exciting, Rufus met a new friend named Isabelle (she is human!) We played with my new toy. Then we had morning tea (Rufus shared mine) then we kept playing until lunch. After that we made a circus on felt. After Rufus and Isabelle met my dogs. Then she left. I had a really fun day but now I'm kind of sad! I will really miss Rufus. I hope he enjoys his other new friends in other parts of the world.
