Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Whitney/Shattuck Family

Rufus arrived here today in sunny Florida. Alisha's sister opened Rufus up as she was too excited to wait until Alisha got home from school (Veronica is 15). Rufus went to visit grandma and grandpa with Alisha's Ruby bear. We told them about Ruby and Rufus and the diabetes postage stamp. We called the two local newspapers and one of them is coming over Tuesday for photos and interview.

Alisha was very excited to see Rufus when she got home from school. Rufus watched Pokemon with her. Then she noticed that Rufus needed a site change, so Rufus got a Rapid in his arm now. Rufus and Alisha went rollerblading with their matching pumps. Then they took a nap, Ruby, Rufus and Alisha.

After dinner, we went to visit Alisha's Uncle Lee and Aunt Phyllis. They drive a semi truck and Rufus and Ruby got their picture taken sitting in the drivers seat with Alisha. Rufus also met Uncle Lee's dog, Gizmo, who really wanted to play with Rufus and Ruby. Tomorrow Rufus and Ruby will go to school with Alisha on the school bus.

Rufus and Ruby went to Alisha's school. One of the teachers read Rufus' book and parts of the journal and parts of "Sugar was my Best Food." The kids got to hold Rufus or Ruby and see where insulin shots go, etc. Rufus went on a field trip to Publix (a grocery store), dairy, and to McDonalds. He got to have ice cream and see how milk was processed and ice cream was made. After school he roller bladed with Alisha. She needed a site change. Then Veronica had a softball game. Alisha's site fell out then also. Not a great day for sites. She got a shot of H and NPH and her site put back in while she and Rufus and Ruby were sleeping. Her BS was 186 before the insulin of 5H and 16 NPH and climbed to 362, 386, 450, where the pump went in and bolus for bs and half basal rate. Then she was 184 at 7:30 and changed to full basal and 0.3 given and 52 at 11:00.

Before we left to go to St. Pete All Children's Hospital for the Egg Hunt, Alisha had to do another site change. Rufus was given some crayons at the egg hunt to color with. Some of the parents, kids, and volunteers want to sign:

Dear Rufus,
We're on Spring Break in sunny Florida. Keegan is a 5 year old diabetic boy who was diagnosed at 2 years old. Today, we had a picnic in the park and a nature walk. In the afternoon we joined all our friends in the diabetes support group for an Easter egg hunt. What fun! Happy Holiday!
Kristy Novik (mom) and Keegan

Dear Rufus,
I like your pump. It was fun seeing you in St. Petersburg, Florida. Come to the beach!
The Shermans (Al, Laura, Ryan, and Arden)

Dear Rufus,
I'm glad I got to see you! My 7 year old daughter is a newly diagnosed diabetic. We pray for a cure always!

Dear Rufus,
Nice to meet you while you were visiting All Children's Hospital for our Easter Egg Hunt. It was tons of fun! Please come back and visit us in St. Petersburg, Florida!
Love always, Shoshanah (volunteer)

Dear Rufus,
Hi, whazzup? It was nice to meet you! You're a kool bear! Bye!
Love always, Nicki

Dear Rufus,

Dear Rufus,
Stay healthy!
The Himmlers (and William, who drew a very cute picture of a syringe)

Hi Rufus,
What did you think about the Beach today? Pretty cool, huh? Oh yeah, and the Tropicana baseball field and the Raymond James stadium where the Devil Rays and where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play. Those were pretty cool too. So, what do you think about Florida so far? Well, I'll let you go to sleep for the ride home. Bye!

We had a great time at the egg hunt, saw the ocean and lots of other things. Alisha had tried the new infusion set by Disetronic today and her bs was up all day. Found out the cannula was crimped. Moderate-large ketones. At least Rufus' bs was ok when Ryan checked it at the egg hunt. Mostly rested Saturday and Sunday from all the activity on Friday.

Rufus went to school with Alisha. It was a normal day. After school Alisha and Rufus watched cartoons. Ate dinner - the usual. Rufus' blood sugar was low so we treated it with juice. Then the inseperable went to sleep together.

Rufus went to school with Alisha and when they got home the reporter was here. They interviewed Rufus and family. Took pictures and left. They did lots of things with Rufus. They did his bloodsugar and stuff like that. Ruf and Ruby hung out at the ball field while Alisha slept through the game. Veronica's team won 2-1. It was a very close, hard game.

Well, Rufus is now ready to start his trip to see Ethan next. Hope he arrives safely. Our newspaper article is supposed to be printed on Tuesday. We will miss Rufus here!
