The Fambrough Family, Conyers, Georgia
October 23, 2001
Rufus arrived at our home in Conyers, Georgia, today! As soon as Jada and Kara got home from school, they tore open the box and gave Rufus a giant hug! We have been looking forward to meeting him for a long time. Rufus went with Kara to karate lessons tonight. He even dressed in a karate uniform. Kara is an advanced red belt. Rufus behaved very well during the whole class.

Kara took Rufus to school today and told the class about his travels. He even got to go play outside at recess and went to technology class. The classes loved him!

Rufus picked a great time to come visit us because we are about to go on a fun vacation! After school today, we all piled into our daddy's truck and drove 7 hours to Cape Canaveral, Florida. We spent the night in a hotel. Rufus slept with Jada and Kara.

We woke up early today and went to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Rufus came with us and saw all of the famous astronauts and even rode some fun space rides! We had a great time. Next we drove to Kennedy Space Center. We didn't get to go on the tour, but we saw many rocket ships and a space shuttle. Next we drove to Port Canaveral and got on our cruise ship called "Sovereign of the Seas!" Rufus and the girls were so excited. We had a picture taken as we went on board. The girls and Rufus had fun exploring the ship. Mommy got a little bit sea sick.
October 27-29, 2001
Our ship went to Nassau, Bahamas, the next morning. It rained alot, but we got to see the "Atlantis" hotel! It was awesome! We had a lot of food and fun on our cruise! It was great to have Rufus with us.

Kara took Rufus to school again today and together they gave a report called "How To Give a Shot." Each child in the class had to give a "how to" report. Kara went through each step: she checked Rufus' blood sugar, drew up insulin, pinched his skin, injected the insulin, pushed the plunger, and waited 10 seconds. She got a grade of "100." Rufus did, too. The class really enjoyed having Rufus with them again. It really helped give them another perspective about kids with diabetes. We forgot to tell you that Kara has the pump now - since last February.
October 31, 2001 Halloween
Jada dressed up as a scary princess and Kara was a hillbilly with BIG teeth!! Rufus trick-or-treated at a few houses with the girls, but then he got tired. When we got home, we all counted candy carbs and pigged out! After our bolus and Rufus' shot our blood sugars were PERFECT!
"I asked Mommy if I could keep Rufus. She said no because Rufus needs to visit other kids with diabetes. So I want a Ruby for Christmas!" (dictated by Kara)
We hope that ya'll have as much fun with Rufus as we did! Best wishes!
