The Johnson Family, Springfield, Illinois
The Johnson Family was so excited to finally have Rufus #6 come to Springfield, Illinois! Sarah, who is 6 years old, was diagnosed with diabetes shortly after her 4th birthday. Her mommy learned about Rufus and Ruby from the Children with Diabetes website. She has had a Ruby bear for about a year. When Rufus got out of his box, he was so happy to see his friend, Ruby!
When Sarah started kindergarten, her mommy and Ruby visited the classroom and told the children all about diabetes. Sarah showed them how she checks her blood glucose, and ruby showed them where Sarah gets her insulin shots. The children asked such good questions and were very interested in helping Sarah with her snacks the whole rest of the school year! Because they had been so curious about all of Ruby's colored patches, Sarah decided they might like to meet Rufus as well. And of course, they loved him!
Sarah's support group for children with diabetes, the Insulators, meets every month. Rufus went to the May 18 meeting with Sarah, her 8 year old sister, Katie, and Mom. (Daddy had to work at the hospital that day.) Sarah's endocrinologists' nurse, Denise, came to the meeting to talk to everyone and answer their questions. She was so happy to meet Rufus!
Sarah was sick in early June with a bad cough. Her asthma always gets worse when she's sick, and her blood glucose levels always go crazy! It was nice having our friend Rufus around when Sarah was sick because she got so tired of all those extra blood sugar checks! Rufus and Ruby were such sympathetic friends!
Sarah ketp Rufus for another week because she wanted him to go along with her family on a short trip to Chicago. He was a good little passenger and loved to play I Spy with Sarah and Katie! The family visited the American Girl Store, Navy Pier, and the Field Museum of Natural History. Mommy said Rufus should stay in the hotel room because he might get lost in the big city, and he was happy to oblige. At least he got to visit the restaurant and the swimming pool with Sarah!
The Johnson's sent Rufus on to Rita Crowley. He was packaged with loving hugs and kisses. We will be anxious to read about Rufus' future adventures!
