Back to Rufus Rufus Visits the Pnakovich Family

The Pnakovich Family, Fairfax, Virginia

February 2-9, 2002
We are just finishing up a wonderful week with Rufus!

He came with us to Paul's dad's office this weekend. Paul's dad works in a federal courthouse, where they have some very important trials. Rufus wished he could have sat in on some cases, but he just posed for some pictures instead. He didn't want to get into too much trouble, and he sure didn't like the looks of handcuffs!

We've had a pretty uneventful week here, except for Paul's birthday! He turned 13 on Thursday, and on Wednesday he got a DVD player, and the movie Jurassic Park 3. Paul and Rufus watched the movie (about 10 times). I think Rufus was a little scared of the dinosaurs, because I swear I thought I caught him covering his eyes with his medic alert bracelet a few times! Since we were celebrating the birthday later in the weekend, Paul had 1 candle on top of sugar free jello. Now I can't be sure of this, but I think one second before Paul went to blow out the candle and make a wish, I thought I saw Rufus blow too, and the candle went out.

Friday night was the start of the Olympics. Rufus enjoyed watching all the athletes march into the stadium, and wondered about all the other countries his brother Rufus bears have been visiting. He wished they would have added more bears to the ceremony instead of so many cowboys, but maybe next time.

Saturday we went to visit Paul's Aunt Patty and her horse KeySpirit. He used to be a racehorse, and Paul enjoys horseback riding. Rufus looked a little jealous, and a little scared. People don't ride bears, after all, and bears don't ride horses! But it was a beautiful day, and he relaxed and even petted the horse a few times.

Friday night... uh oh, Paul feels low. 63. Looks like we're going to have a sleepless night ahead of us, Rufus. But I think Rufus slept through the checks at midnight and 2am. Although, I did think I saw Rufus' eyes move that second time. But I thought I heard snoring. Nah, he didn't wake up.

In the week that Rufus has been here, we have done about 50 glucose tests, and close to 30 shots. Rufus even took more than a few shots himself, just to show how brave he is. We've also had about a dozen lows, and just as many highs. I can't help but think of how many shots, tests, high, and lows Rufus has seen on all his travels.

We'll miss you Rufus, hope you have fun at your next stop!
