Rufus arrived in the mailbox with all his traveling treasures! He was a little low from being on travel and not having enough snacks,(68) but we fed him. Kiersten came home from school and we read his journal. He and Kiersten got acquainted, and we introduced him to Rufella (a Ruby bear who lives at our house). Rufus was interested in Kiersten's schedule, since she does her shots to match what Rufus' pump does. K and R both had a number of 169 before bed, can you believe the coincidence?
Thursday, March 28, 2002
Kiersten's number before breakfast was 204, but Rufus was 108, so Rufus waited until Kiersten could have breakfast before he had his insulin bolus. Then he went back to bed to rest up from his travels while Kiersten went to school. Kiersten invited him to go skiing with her sister, Courtney, and her dad, but Rufus didn't bring his ski pants, so he decided to stay home with Rufella.

Rufus went to school with Kiersten today! He enjoyed sharing, so he could meet Kiersten's classmates. He shared his journal. At lunch, Kiersten's number was 195 when she went to the office for her lunch insulin. Rufus was 204 from not enough exercise, so they both needed a little extra insulin for their lunch. Rufus got a postcard from Truckee, so he can show his other families he visits what it looks like here!

What a busy day! First, Kiersten and Rufus had to figure out their carbs for breakfast and take care of the insulin. Then Kiersten and Courtney taught Rufus how to play Star Wars Pod Racer on the computer! Rufus wasn't very good, because his paws are a little big for the computer buttons. In the afternoon, Kiersten and Courtney went to a birthday party. Rufus opted to stay home and practice Pod Racer. Good thing…Kiersten ate a hamburger, chips, and Baskin Robbins ice cream cake, and even after trying to count all the carbs, she was over 300! Rufus was really glad he hadn't eaten all that, because his number was a wonderful 115.
Sunday, March 31, 2002 - EASTER!
Rufus had fun looking for eggs with Courtney and Kiersten. He found one with a chocolate in it, but he left that on the counter. He's really being good about watching his diet! It shows. His number was 104 this morning. Kiersten's was…yikes! 351! With the crazy day, birthday party, late snack/dinner, and a movie, everyone forgot to do Kiersten's bedtime lantus shot! But with extra humulog, Kiersten got all straightened out. Kiersten, Courtney and Dad all went skiing for the day. Rufus hung out with the cats in the sunshine, playing with Easter eggs.
Monday, April 1, 2002
Kiersten was 251 this morning. Mom and Dad are going to sit down and figure out what's wrong. Rufus was 172. Guess he's been too lazy and needs some exercise today, for sure! Rufus went with Mom to Reno to meet Nevada's U.S. Senator Reid through the Northern Nevada JDRF! Rufus and some other diabetic kids had their photo taken with Senator Reid, who is the Majority Whip in the senate. He puts a high priority on federal funding for diabetes research. Thanks, Senator Reid!

Wow! What a busy house! Mom was off to a meeting, Courtney was doing laundry, Kiers and Court and Rufus were packing up for camping! Friday is a "hookie" day from school, so we can all go off to Albion on the California coast for camping and abalone diving! Rufus was excited, because Kiersten's Rufus and Rufella get to go also.
Friday - Monday, April 5-8, 2002
Camping in Albion! Rufus and Kiersen's numbers were all a little low because of running around on the beach a lot. Rufella's numbers were running a little high, because she ate too much breakfast! What fun, though, collecting shells and other treasures!
Tuesday, April 9, 2002 Rufus was 208 and Kiersten was 295 this morning. We think the Lantus got too warm in the truck on the way home. Everyone is pretty tired from the time change and the long drive home. Kiersten went to school, but Rufus just didn't feel up to it, so he stayed in Kiersten's room and read.
Wednesday, April 10, 2002
We changed the Lantus last night. Everyone's numbers were good this morning again. Kiersten had oatmeal on the way to school with mom, because it is a GATE morning - mom teaches before school 2 mornings a week. Rufus said he had to stay and pack his things so he can go off to his next family! He did help Kiersten finish her amphibians report after school, though!
Rufus, we've had fun with you here! Have fun on your next adventures!
