Rufus arrived today! As soon as he got out of the box, he saw my Rufus.

Rufus arrived several days ago with cookies to travel with and stories of his adventures in Massachusetts and Texas. We thought he needed some rest after all his travels. So he helped with homework and trumpet lessons until today. Today he joined us for a Christmas potluck. Since the potluck was friends from the Denver Diabetes Support Group, all the kids were happy to meet Rufus. Rufus had fun being around so many children. Rufus enjoyed the potluck too. Since all the families were used to cooking for diabetic children, Rufus didn't have any problem with the food.
We are a little out of practice with figuring out shot doses since Sarah's been pumping since February 2001. But we seemed to have guessed right as Rufus was in range before bed.

Rufus got to go to another party tonight. This one was at the Denver zoo. Instead of healthy foods there were mostly snack finger foods, cheese and crackers and chicken nuggets. Sarah and Rufus had more of a challenge deciding on healthy dinner choices. And of course there were sugar cookies - yum. After dinner we walked around the zoo and enjoyed the special wildlights light sculptures and light displays. Rufus also liked seeing the animals. Most of the animals were sleeping-even the polar bears. Rufus seemed a little nervous in the Cat house, but all the leopards and jaguars were sound asleep and not too interested in a small bear. Rufus got to see Santa, but was feeling too shy to sit in Santa's lap.
After all that walking and probably overestimating the carbohydrate counts in the cookies, and bolusing too high a dose, Sarah and Rufus both had low blood sugars. Juice and graham crackers before bed seemed to do the trick. Both were fine when checked later on. Tomorrow Rufus will be going to school with Sarah to meet her class and talk about diabetes. Rufus helped us pick out a Christmas tree today, too. Thanks for the help, Rufus.

Rufus went to school today. Sarah and her friend, Julie, introduced Rufus to all three 5th grade classes. The girls explained to each class about Rufus' travels, about diabetes, and the different ways they manage their diabetes; pump versus shots.
The kids seemed to enjoy Rufus' visit and he received many hugs from the kids. We think Rufus had fun going to school too.

Rufus wanted to send cards to Dawson, Jordan, and Courtney to show where his travels have taken him. He misses his friends.
