What Is The Impact Of Exercise On Blood Glucose?

Treating type 2 diabetes is a balancing act. Food intake, exercise, and medicines have to be carefully balanced to keep your blood glucose levels in check. One important step in this delicate balance is making sure that when you exercise, your blood sugar levels don't get too low. When you exercise, your body starts relying on its own glucose for energy so the glucose levels in your blood often goes lower (that's a good thing). But there are times when blood sugar can dip too low, especially if you also take insulin. This temporary condition is called, hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. This shouldn't keep you from exercising, because you can learn to recognize the signs of hypoglycemia – feeling nervous, shaky, or confused – and quickly react by taking some form of sugar. Doctors suggest drinking a glass of juice, taking a glucose tablet or eating candy that contains sugar. If you've experienced hypoglycemia before, you can reduce further risk by having a doctor adjust your medicine doses and by carefully timing meals and snacks according to your exercise schedule.
