Medical Treatment Of Double Diabetes
Everyone with type 1 diabetes requires insulin therapy. If it's determined that a person with type 1 diabetes also has type 2 diabetes there might be a need for blood glucose-lowering pills, particularly those that improve insulin resistance. Since double diabetes is a new problem, doctors have not had enough experience - or performed enough research - to decide what treatment approaches are most effective.
Since the control of blood glucose is critical, some doctors believe that blood glucose lowering pills might improve glucose control. There are a number of research studies underway which will provide guidance within the next few years. In the meantime, maintaining glucose control, achieving weight loss, being physically active and eating a nutritious diet are essential to managing double diabetes and decreasing complications.
At the time of diagnosis, if the type of diabetes cannot be determined, the child or teenager should start insulin therapy while waiting for test results that, hopefully, will clarify the situation.
Treatment for high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipids and elements of PCOS should follow standard treatments for these disorders.
